Middlesbrough Student Accommodation

About Middlesbrough

Situated on the southern bank of the River Tees, Middlesbrough is fast becoming one of the most popular student towns in the UK. Famed for its football club and iconic Transporter Bridge, this thriving North Yorkshire town attracts talent from across the world to its schools and industry – a trend which isn’t about to slow any time soon.

Back in the 1800s, Middlesbrough was known as Ironopolis and played a leading role in Britain’s industrial revolution. A lot has changed since then, but the town’s reputation for high growth in technology is alive and well.

In fact, just three miles east of Middlesbrough is the UK’s third largest port. Teesport is home to a collection of high-performing engineering and manufacturing companies, which often serve as a career springboard for local graduates of Teesside University with degrees in the field and budding students seeking internships. Keeping in line with the times, the town has also made a name for itself as a hotspot for digital animation, with several well-renowned studios choosing Middlesbrough as their base.

Middlesbrough Student Accommodation

Searching for student housing in Middlesbrough will lead you to a wide array of options – whether you’re looking to live in a modern new-build or settle into a more traditional, spacious house with a group of friends.

Although Middlesbrough was badly bombed in the Second World War, some of the town’s impressive Victorian architecture remains intact. In the town centre, rows of Victorian terraced houses line the streets towards Albert Park.

South of Middlesbrough’s town centre, you’ll find Linthorpe, where traditional terraces line Oliver Street and Haymore Street. There is also a large selection of Victorian and Edwardian properties to be found on Claude Avenue and Cambridge Road. These period homes have kept their vintage charm despite being transformed into student homes in recent years.

On the outskirts of Middlesbrough, a showcase of stunning period homes and stylish apartments houses families, professionals and students. Together, they help to foster a strong spirit of community throughout the town.

As well as preserving period homes, Middlesbrough has invested heavily in developing certain parts of the town to make way for new businesses, creative centres and educational facilities. The result is a vibrant cultural hub that is increasingly recognised for its entertainment offering, shopping opportunities and nightlife. This makes searching for student accommodation in Middlesbrough that much easier, knowing you will be surrounded by an abundance of activities.

Student Life in Middlesbrough

There’s more to Middlesbrough than its rich and interesting history. In the last few decades, various large-scale regeneration projects have put the town back on the map as a progressive, cultural and cosmopolitan location to live and work.

When you move to Middlesbrough, it won’t take long for you to become a proud Smoggy – a nickname given to people from Teesside. Residents are benefiting from ongoing investment and improvement to shopping and nightlife, with both Baker Street and Bedford Street growing in popularity for their shops, pubs and diverse restaurants.

For an all-day breakfast and healthy comfort food, we recommend the Baker Street Kitchen. If you’re after a stomach-settling pub lunch and a generous serving of hospitality, head to the Chairman on Bedford Street – the staff are always happy to welcome students and the prices reflect this. On Linthorpe Road, live music plays from Sticky Fingers Café and Rock Bar, where you can try a Hotshot Parm (a twist on the classic) and choose from a long list of cocktails.

When it comes to entertainment, students in Middlesbrough are spoilt for choice: live music and entertainment can be found at the Town Hall, a Grade II listed building that plays host to some of the biggest names in comedy, music and theatre. Meanwhile, venues like Mink Bar draw in crowds for live bands, acoustic sessions, burlesque acts and stand-up comedy shows every week.

After a morning study session, why not take the afternoon to browse for bargains in the centre of Middlesbrough? Here, you’ll find not one, but four shopping centres, including the Cleveland Centre and Hillstreet Centre. These centres are home to the high-street favourites, but if you’re looking for something more upmarket, head to the designer quarter on Linthorpe Road. When the artisan street food market comes to Baker Street on the last Saturday of every month, students flock there to sample local delicacies.

At the Riverside Stadium, you can support the town’s football team, Middlesbrough F.C or hop on a behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium. Or, when the sun is shining and breaks between classes allow, students stroll to Steward Park – a sprawling haven of historic parkland that spans 120 acres. The town of Middlesbrough is home to more than a few elegant parks, including Albert Park in the centre and the Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park on the outskirts towards the south.
