Bournemouth student housing market: trends explained

Handily located near Bournemouth University and Arts University Bournemouth, the suburb of Winton takes the lead as the most in-demand area for Bournemouth student accommodation. Living in this popular neighbourhood means you get to keep up with all the action on campus while benefiting from spacious accommodation as well as an abundance of cafés, bars, and takeaways. Student houses in Bournemouth’s Winton face fierce competition, though, so make sure you start looking sooner rather than later if you fancy living here.

For anyone studying at Health Sciences University, neighbouring Boscombe (the second-most popular choice) is the ideal place to look for student accommodation in Bournemouth. Charminster is also a popular pocket of Bournemouth when it comes to student housing, and these areas both boast their own benefits, like the O2 Academy and AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium.

You won’t be short on options in the city centre, either, where you’ll find a range of Bournemouth student apartments and more (placing you right at the heart of the action). Surrounded by shops and just a stone’s throw from the beach, this location is ideal for those new to the town.

Students seeking to live near their campus will find plenty of options for student accommodation in the Wallisdown corridor between Bournemouth and Poole, whereas the surrounding suburbs of Ensbury Park and Moordown offer a quaint countryside feel and regular bus links to keep students connected to both their university campuses and the town centre.

Besides its award-winning beaches, this fast-growing Dorset town is known for its beautiful and bustling town centre. From Victorian arcades to contemporary amenities, you’ll find yourself travelling through time as you saunter through the centre. Commercial Road and Old Christchurch Road are buzzing with high street chains, but the independent boutiques off the beaten track on Albert Road, Yelverton Road and the Triangle are where the real magic can be found. The student flats in Bournemouth city centre are ideal living spaces for anyone who fancies independent domesticity, and are well connected to Bournemouth’s unis thanks to the town’s transport links.

When it comes to entertainment, you won’t be short on options. This vibrant town has everything from international concert venues and theatres to live music and nightclubs. Students in Bournemouth know how to let off some steam, whether it’s an all-night rave at Halo Nightclub or a quality night out at The Exchange, Bournemouth’s longest-running LGBTQ+ bar.

Renowned throughout the country for the acts it attracts, the Bournemouth International Centre is one of the south’s largest venues and regularly hosts an eclectic mix of the music industry’s biggest names. If that wasn’t enough, nearby Boscombe also boasts the O2 Academy; based in what used to be the Grand Theatre, this Grade II listed building has a way of making even the most low-key sets feel special.

Besides music, Bournemouth is a comedy hotspot, offering students a huge stand-up and open mic scene across its many pubs and clubs. If you’ve ever considered being funny for a living (or just want to give it a go), you’ll have plenty of opportunities here. If not, you can kick back and enjoy the show in one of the many coastal pubs that showcase the emerging talent the town has to offer.
