Student Accommodation in Oxford

Students arriving here to study at the city’s prestigious universities (the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University) will no doubt be spoilt for choice when it comes to student housing in Oxford.

As the birthplace of dark academia, living in Oxford means living amongst signs of the town’s rich cultural heritage, with the many of the local shops, supermarkets, cafés and bars located in and around stately Medieval, Gothic, Renaissance, Victorian and Modern-style buildings. It’s basically the student dream.

Oxford student housing market: trends explained

Sitting just behind the city centre and many of the University of Oxford’s famous colleges, East Oxford is at the top of the list when it comes to popular student accommodation areas in Oxford. This neighbourhood encompasses (you guessed it) much of the east of Oxford, and stretches out to the Oxford Brookes University campus out near Headington; its accessibility means East Oxford is a hugely-convenient spot for Oxford student housing for both Oxford Brookes and Oxford Uni students.

Students who want to be even closer to Oxford Brookes love Headington, which is why this is the runner up for most sought-after Oxford student accommodation. Headington is a quiet suburb that overlooks the city, and is filled with a variety of shops, takeaways, restaurants and pubs – everything a student could need, really.

Want a bit more hustle and bustle? Oxford’s city centre (the third most popular part of Oxford for student accommodation) is the heart of this historic town, and is where you’ll find most of Oxford’s busiest retailers. This aesthetic area is also home to loads of gems, from Blackwell’s book shop and the Bodleian Library to the Rad Cam; there’s something for every kind of IG feed, thanks to the city centre being where you’ll find most of the University of Oxford’s grandiose architecture.

Student life in Oxford

Oxford combines the best of both the ancient and the modern to create a postcard-perfect city. With iconic places like Oxford Castle and Oxford University’s Museum of Natural History, the city is bursting at the seams with cultural experiences for those new to the town.

If the name alone conjures up images of students lounging on green spaces, rowers practising for the annual Oxbridge tournament, and tourists walking along the cobbled streets and soaking up its history, you wouldn’t be wrong – but there’s a lot more to this place than meets the eye. Nowadays, Oxford is both a thriving tech hub and bustling town that’s home to a multitude of businesses, not to mention its buzzing restaurant scene.

If you’re more into scenic riverside pubs, you’ll feel right at home in this English city. Oxford has loads of student-friendly pubs and bars by both its universities, and the clubbing scene is surprisingly lively, too, with students flocking to The Bridge, Plush, and The Varsity Club.

Students promising themselves they’ll at least try and keep fit while studying in Oxford will be pleased to know the residents here are famously active. Since it’s a relatively small city, it doesn’t take long to walk, jog or cycle to your destination – and the sights make it all the more enjoyable. Of course, Oxford is renowned for rowing, and during the summer months, the River Isis (which eventually turns into the Thames) becomes the training ground for avid rowers.

It might not compare to nearby London for shopping, but Oxford has the perfect balance of high street retailers and independent shops for students to stock up on new pieces for their wardrobes. The Westgate Shopping Centre and Clarendon Shopping Centre will keep you busy if you’re in need of retail therapy post-exams, and there are plenty of cosy bookshops where you can source out all the educational materials that you’ll need for the term to come.
