Hull student housing market: trends explained

Newland Ave is the heart of Hull’s student community, so it only makes sense that Newland itself is the most popular area for student properties in Hull. This neighbourhood is centred around what is essentially a bustling student high street, with a plethora of shops, takeaways, restaurants, cafes, and bars open all hours of the day (perfect for both the early risers and the late-nighters). Newland is also where you’ll find The New Adelphi Club, a legendary venue that’s seen Oasis, Green Day, and Radiohead grace its stage.

Newland’s transport connections, plus its proximity to the city centre and the University of Hull – which is just around the corner – also boost its popularity, but if you fancy putting a little more distance between you and the lecture halls, then student accommodation on Hull’s Beverley Road is a good shout.

One of the main thoroughfares in and out of Hull, Beverley Road is the runner-up in terms of popular student areas in Hull. This long road not only consists of large, spacious student houses, but also has a wide range of amenities like supermarkets, parks, restaurants, and pubs – not to mention student favourite The Welly, a club and live music venue that’s famed for its ‘Jelly’ indie discos.

Depending on where you live on Bev Road, student accommodation in this part of Hull still isn’t that far from campus. Nor is student housing around Hull’s third-place winner of The Avenues, a lovely and quaint suburb that’s just a half-hour walk away from the University of Hull.

The Avenues covers Princes Avenue, one of Hull’s prime night-out spots. But if you want to live at the absolute centre of all the action – surrounded by the very best of what this maritime town has to offer – then look for a student apartment in Hull’s city centre.

Student life in Hull

There’s so much more to Hull than what meets the eye. For starters, Hull city centre is always lively and vibrant on a Saturday night, thanks to beloved pubs and bars like The Three John Scotts (a Wetherspoon inside a grandiose former Post Office), The Brain Jar (a trendy cocktail bar set against the backdrop of Hull Minster), and Ye Olde White Harte (a 17th century pub hidden down the cobbled streets of Hull’s historic Old Town).

If you’re a fan of impressive architecture, check out Hull’s hidden, colourful Georgian terraced houses on Prince Street, or look up when you’re in Queen Victoria Square and gaze at the impressive City Hall, Maritime Museum and Ferens Art Gallery buildings.

Maybe you care more about shopping? In which case, St Stephen’s Shopping Centre has all the household brands you need (like Next, Zara and H&M), whereas Humber Street over by the Marina is filled with independent fashion and homeware stores – perfect for those who love to shop small.

Food enthusiasts will also greatly appreciate Hull, with so much of Hull’s student accommodation being situated near amazing eateries like B-side on Newland Ave and Ambiente on Humber Street. Besides, student life in Hull is incomplete without trying two of Hull’s best inventions: chip spice and patties. You can find chip spice smothering any takeaway you get after your night out, and the best patties can be found at Hull chippies like Cave Street Fisheries (off Bev Road) and Kingfisher Fish & Chips (behind the uni).

Of course, some of the best ways to enjoy Hull involve visiting The Deep, an award-winning aquarium that overlooks the point where the River Hull meets the Humber. The Deep makes for a genuinely amazing day out, even if you think you’re too old to obsess over penguins and sharks, and even offers a much-appreciated student discount for uni-goers.

Hull Fair is also an unmissable attraction; this annual event occurs for two weeks every October and is East Yorkshire’s crowning jewel. Think thrilling fairground rides like rollercoasters and waltzers, as well as novelty stalls such as hook-a-duck and food vendors that sell doughnuts, candy floss, and brandy snaps. Thousands flock to central Hull every year for the fair, including the hordes of University of Hull students who make their way down from Newland Ave over to Spring Bank and Anlaby Road for the event.

Did you know?

Hull sometimes seems like it’s a world of its own, a vibe that’s bolstered by unconventional street names like the Land of Green Ginger. This cobbled lane lies at the beginning of Hull’s Old Town, just off Whitefriargate, and claims to be home to the world’s smallest window (a story for another time).

It’s reportedly been called this for at least 200 years, but no one really seems to know just exactly how this street ended up being named the Land of Green Ginger.
