Student Housing in Glasgow

'People Make Glasgow', as the city's slogan says, and with around 185,000 students calling Scotland's largest city their home, you lot are a huge part of that.

Glasgow's famous for its vibrant nightlife, cosmopolitan culture, quirky independent shops and stunning green spaces, all of which make it a great place to spend your uni years. Not to go all Francis Bourgeois, but it’s also one of the only UK cities to have an underground metro service, which is cool in itself but makes it incredibly easy to get around as a student, too.

Home to three major universities (the University of Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Strathclyde), as well as the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow has one of the biggest student populations in the UK, so you're bound to have a great social life here.

The Glasgow student housing market: trends explained

As explained in our FAQs below, the West End is the most popular Glasgow student area. That's because it's a trendy suburb found just a short distance from Glasgow Uni's main Gilmorehill campus, and also contains a handy mix of student flats and apartments, as well as larger houses suitable for groups.

Likewise, the city centre is handy for Glasgow Caledonian Uni and Strathclyde Uni students, whose campuses are both found in the heart of the centre.

Student life in Glasgow

Home to the famous Duke of Wellington (who’s rarely sighted without a cone on his head), stunning Mackintosh architecture and over 3,500 hectares of greenery, Glasgow is a city of contradictions. But there’s no denying that Glasgow is a fab student city.

Despite being the biggest city in Scotland, Glasgow is easy to navigate — it’s easy for students to get around using the metro, buses or bikes. This means that Glasgow's beautiful green spaces (like Queen’s Park) are only a short journey away, making them great places for students to relax between assignments and exams in warmer months.

If you’re after an experience that's more cultural than outdoorsy, all of the art galleries in Glasgow are free to enter — perfect for budget-conscious students! What's more, Glasgow offers some of the best nightlife in the UK; check out the Berkeley Suite or SWG3 for live music and student club nights. For live gigs, there are loads of iconic venues, like Barrowland and the O2 Academy. The Garage on Sauchiehall Street is one of the city's most popular student clubs, but there are also plenty of cosy pubs and trendy cocktail bars dotted around the West End if that’s more your vibe.

Did you know?

Glasgow boasts an iconic pub crawl which is based on its metro system. It's known by two brilliant names: the "Clockwork Orange Crawl" (because the metro map is orange) or "The Subcrawl" (you can figure that out yourself). The challenge is to visit a pub near each of the 15 subway stations, starting in the city centre and travelling clockwise or anticlockwise around the map.

Told you the Glasgow underground was worth mentioning!
